英文難似乎就難在動詞。清楚這點，英文似乎也沒有那麼難了。可以這樣說，搞定動詞，就搞定英文。現在，想辦法讓自己的腦子在最短時間裡就抓到正確的字，講對的英文。
1.這本書我能借多久？
（X）How long can I
borrow the book?
（O）How long can I keep
this book?
看到這個句子錯了，很多人直覺，把borrow換成lend就對了。其實用lend也錯了。借入英文中用borrow，借出用lend，但這兩個字都是瞬間動詞，不能用長時間的動作，所以我能借多久，意思是我能保留它多久，用keep。
2.我帶你去人資部門。
（X）I will bring you to
the Human Resources Department.
（O）I will take you to
the Human Resources Department.
帶來、帶去，或來回程在英文裡各有不同的動詞，帶來是bring，帶去是take，而去取回來是fetch。
（O）John, fetch your
drink yourself. John, 自己去拿飲料吧。
（O）Don’t forget to bring your notebook next time. 下次別忘了帶筆電。
3.我沒法接電話？
（X）I can’t receive the phone.
（O）I can’t answer the phone.
接電話英文有特定的用法，answer意思是應答，像有人敲門，應門也用answer。
有一個常和answer搞混的動詞是reply，後面如果跟著受詞時，要加上to。
She did not reply to our proposal.（她沒有回應我們的建議。）
4.我沒聽懂你說的話。
（X）I didn’t hear what you said.
（O）I didn’t understand what you said.
這句話不是沒聽到，而是沒聽懂。hear是聽覺、聽到，像別人講話太小聲，聽不到，就說I can’t hear。沒聽懂，重點不在「聽」，而在「懂」，所以要用另一個動詞understand。
和hear很接近的一個字是listen to：hear 重點是聽到什麼，而listen to是側重於聽的傾向，但hear用於無意中的聽見，而listen to卻用於集中注意力的聽。
（O） I heard him say so.（我聽到他這麼說。）
（O） She is listening to
the radio.（她正在聽廣播。）
